The Arms race was a competition for supremacy in nuclear weaponry between the United States and the Soviet Union,  and their respective allies during the Cold War in 1945 to 1989.  It was called Cold War to the mode of been in a constantly state of alert because at anytime both sides could released a nuclear war.
